Malik prevails

Special Correspondent

GURGAON: It was an all-Indian line up in the semifinals of the boys’ section as Vijayant Malik led the Indian surge in the ITF grade ‘II’ junior tennis tournament at the NTA Complex here on Thursday.

It was a refreshing change from the grade ‘III’ tournament last week at Chandigarh in which both the boys’ and girls’ singles titles had been bagged by foreigners. More importantly, it was a revenge victory for Malik, who had lost the final last week to Lewis Barnes.

This time Malik prevailed over the Briton 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to set up a semifinal clash against Akash Wagh. A trainee from the Mahesh Bhupathi centre in Bangalore, Wagh ousted the third-seeded Joachim Sternbach of France, losing just four games.

The other semifinal will feature the fourth-seeded Sudanwa Sitaram against Chandril Sood.

Rashmi advances

In the girls’ section, Rashmi Teltumbe emerged the sole Indian in the semifinals as she ousted the second-seeded Anna Rapoport of Russia 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. She will face Maria Meliuk of Belarus who beat the sixth-seeded Tanvi Shah in three sets.

The results (quarterfinals):

Under-18 boys: Vijayant Malik bt Lewis Barnes (GBR) 3-6, 6-2, 6-2; Akash Wagh bt Joachim Sternbach (Fra) 6-2, 6-2; Sudanwa Sitaram bt Palash Tiwari 6-1, 6-3; Chandril Sood bt Riki Maclachlan (Nzl) 6-3, 6-2.

Under-18 girls: Piven Ganna (Ukr) w/o Alieva Sevil (Aze); Margarita Lazareva (Rus) bt Sweta Kumari Solanki 4-6, 7-5, 6-0; Maria Meliuk (Blr) bt Tanvi Shah 6-4, 3-6, 6-4; Rashmi Teltumbe bt Anna Rapoport (Rus) 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
