Anup Sridhar advances

Kuala Lumpur: Anup Sridhar scored a come-from-behind victory, while Saina Nehwal crashed out in the women’s singles first round of the Malaysia Open Super Series badminton here.

Sridhar defeated Tan Chun Seang of Malaysia 16-21, 21-18, 21-14 in 49 minutes and will face World No. 28 Korean Lee Hyun Il in the second round.

Saina lost 21-23, 9-21 to Juliane Schenk of Germany.

In the women’s doubles, Shruti Kurian and Jwala Gutta also failed to advance beyond the first round, losing to the English pair of Joanne Nicholas and Natalie Munt 12-21, 21-14, 17-21. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat lost 21-18, 21-16 to compatriot Simon Santoso in the second round.

Malaysia’s top-seeded Lee Chong Wei overcame a second-set lapse to beat Poland’s Przemyslaw Wacha 21-5, 15-21, 21-8. In the women’s singles, third seed Zhu Lin of China battled into the quarterfinals with an 11-21, 21-17, 21-16 victory over Hong Kong’s Zhou Mi. — Agencies
