All-India BSNL football tournament

BANGALORE: Holder West Bengal and runner-up Karnataka will contend with teams from 20 other circles for the top honours in the seventh all-India BSNL football tournament beginning here on Friday.

The teams are divided into four groups with the winners of each group figuring in the semifinals.

The matches will be held at the Bangalore football stadium, 515 Army Base Workshop ground, CMP and Nandan (Austin Town) grounds.

Four International footballers from the state — Ahmed Khan (1948, 1952 Olympics), Varadaraj (1948, 1952 Olympics), T. Shanmugham (1952 Olympics) and Arumainayagam (1962 Jakarta Asian Games Gold Medallist) — will be felicitated by the Karnataka Circle Sports & Cultural Board of the BSNL on Friday.

The groupings:

Group A: West Bengal, TN, Bihar, MP, North East II;

Group B: Karnataka, MTNL (Delhi), J&K, Gujarat and Chattisgarh;

Group C: Punjab, Orissa, AP, NTR (Delhi), Maharashtra and UP (East);

Group D: MTNL (Mumbai), Kerala, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, North East I and HP.

The Karnataka team: S. Sundarmurthy, D. Suresh, M. Sukumaran, S. Kadiravan, E. Paramesh, P. Jayavelu, V. Rajanmurthy, S.Kabilan, Md. Ali Khan, G. Rajkumar, T.P. Jayakumar, X. Felix Alwin, A.P. Iftequar Ahmed (captain), B. Suresh Kumar, Md. Nazim Bepari. Coach: P. Adisheshan. Manager: K.B. Ganesh Babu.

Midnight marathon on May 17

Crossover Sports Pvt. Limited, along with Rotary Bangalore IT Corridor, will organise the second Bangalore Midnight Marathon, in and around Cubbon Park, here on May 17.

The first midnight marathon, held last year, was conducted in a loop circuit at Whitefield. The proceeds, expected to the tune of Rs. 50 lakh, will go towards charity.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Neeraj Verma, Race Director, Crossover, said, “besides the seriousness elements of a marathon, fun, excitement and entertainment, there will be folk artists, musicians, fire-eaters and plenty more to cheer the participants.

“Clip timings will be in place like the last edition and being a part of the Sports Tourism event, the marathon is expected to rope in a lot foreign entries.”.

Pankaj Advani, representing the sports fraternity, and Kannada actor Chetan were also present.

State badminton team

The National junior girls’ champion V. Ruth Misha will spearhead Karnataka’s challenge in the 63rd inter-State and 72nd National senior badminton championship which gets underway at Panaji from January 19.

Besides Ruth Misha, the Karnataka women’s team has in its ranks, the junior doubles champion pair, Nitya Sosale and Ashwini Ponnappa. V. Amar and D. Guru Prasad are the key players in the men’s team.

The teams: Men: Singles: V. Amar, D. Guru Prasasad, S.D.S. Krishna and Ajit Wijetilak. Doubles: D. Guru Prasad and Abhijith Naimpally, Sunil GF Gladson and Raghavan. Women: Singles: V. Ruth Misha, Ashwini Ponnappa. Doubles: Ashwini Ponnappa and Nitya Sosale., Ruth Misha and Saumya Padhye. Mixed doubles: Nitya Sosale and Arun B Vishnu.
