Congress renews demand for CBI probe

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: Opposition Congress on Thursday reiterated its demand for a CBI probe into the recent communal violence Kandhamal district and urged the government to take all possible measures to protect the rights of tribals in that region.

Addressing presspersons at the party headquarters here, chairman of the Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee’s Scheduled Tribes wing, Ramachandra Ulaka, said a CBI inquiry was necessary to know who were behind the riots and to punish the guilty.

While some people were saying that the violence in Kandhamal district was communal in nature involving Hindus and Christians, others were terming it as a result of the conflict between the tribals and Dalits or those speaking Kui language and those not speaking the language, Mr. Ulaka said.

The senior tribal leader and the newly elected office-bearers of the party’s Scheduled Tribe wing would visit the violence-affected areas of Kandhamal to study the situation.

Demanding adequate relief for the affected people in Kandhamal, Mr. Ulaka emphasised the need for grant of land rights to the thousands of hapless landless tribal families in the district.

Madhab Sardar and Sahura Mallick have been appointed vice-chairman of the wing and four leaders -- Kanhu Soren, Bhujabala Majhi, Ranjit Kisan and Ujaladei Majhi -- have been appointed convenors, Mr. Ulaka said.
