Rape attempt: arrested youth produced in court

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: The person, who was arrested on charges of attempting to rape a woman lawyer, was produced before Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate amidst unprecedented security arrangement as lawyers threatened to attack him.

Though lawyers were prepared to thrash the man who allegedly attempted to rape their colleague, the police gave an escort and produced him before SDJM in the evening, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Bhubaneswar Zone) Amitabh Thakur said here. The court rejected his bail plea and remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days. “The accused was not represented by any lawyer,” Mr. Thakur said.

The 28-year-old accused, Laxmidhar Swain of Balipatna village on the outskirt of Bhubaneswar, was caught with the help of sniffer dog even as lawyers took to the street in connection with the incident on Wednesday.
