CUTTACK: The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission got a new chief on Thursday when the State government appointed the senior most member of the panel Subash Mahtab as its acting president. The post of the president of the commission was lying vacant after Justice R.K. Patra was made the chairman of the State Human Right Commission earlier this month. “Mahtab would perform the duties of the president as per Section 22 (D) of the Consumer Protection Act-1986,” said a government notification issued by the secretary of food and civil supplies and consumer welfare department. The panel now has one lady member, Basanti Devi, who was the former district judge of Mayurbhanj. Currently about 3000 cases are pending before the Consumer panel for disposal. Ever since the commission was formed in 1993, the number of cases started piling up. But after Justice Patra was made the president of the Commission in 2005, the number of pending cases drastically came down as a record number of cases were disposed of during the incumbency of Justice Patra during last three years. During the period starting from 2005 to 2007, as many as 391 consumer cases and 3,160 first appeal cases were filed before the Commission in the State..
