JAIPUR: Theft of power has been made a non-bailable offence in Rajasthan along with a revised provision for restoration of an electricity connection not before two years on the conviction for committing the offence twice. The fine imposed on a person found stealing electricity would be calculated on the basis of consumption by him for 12 months for all types of connections, such as domestic, commercial, industrial and agricultural, said a spokesperson of Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam here on Wednesday. The fine will be double the amount of power tariff. The spokesperson said the electricity connection would be cancelled immediately on the consumer being caught stealing power, and a first information report registered within 24 hours. The Centre had amended the law on theft of power last year and forwarded it recently to the States after the rules having been framed under the legislation. The amended law provides for imprisonment up to three years or fine or both on the theft of power. The spokesperson said the fine would be three times the quantity of electricity stolen for the first time and six times for the second time.
