Transport servers to be networked

Suresh Krishnamoorthy

HYDERABAD: Computer servers of the Transport Department in the State capital, Kadapa and Vijayawada have been identified for pilot projects to web-enable them by the month-end.

When the 38 other servers in transport offices across the State will be made online and net-worked ‘real-time’ with the Central server in the Transport Commissioner’s office by March, it will mean instant updating of information regarding all motorised vehicles, said Joint Commissioner C.L.N. Gandhi.

Interestingly, the software up-gradation will pin down all those buying a second vehicle and do not register them. With effect from January 2, 2008, payment of 12 per cent life tax (on invoice cost of vehicle) was made mandatory for all those buying a second vehicle on their name. Tax for first-time buyers is nine per cent.

Consequent to the upgradation process, expected to take three months, those who do not register their vehicles (two or three-wheelers) paying 12 per cent tax will not go scot-free. “Our Central server will pick up information about non-transport vehicle purchases on a single name and we will issue notices to such defaulters. They will then have to pay an additional penalty of one per cent every month for the entire 12 per cent,” Mr. Gandhi warned.

He said the current system of updating information on registration of vehicles was only through the 41 secondary servers.

By the end of the day, the transactions would be updated in the Central server. However, the present system also meant that entries were being duplicated.

Now with real-time web-enabling, servers in district offices would instantly talk to the Central server and update information, also avoiding the duplication and triplication, Mr. Gandhi said.
