HYDERABAD: After the insistence on division of Andhra Pradesh into three separate States, a new but unusual demand is being voiced for creation of a Greater Hyderabad State. As if to prove a point that they were not lagging behind their peers in other regions demanding separation, leaders from Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts say they deserve a new State which would be much larger in terms of population, area, economy and demographics, compared to many smaller States in the country. They feel the echo of the ‘Greater’ demand would be heard in the Congress headquarters in Delhi, as the ‘proposed state’ would comprise one crore people with diverse cultures and 29 Assembly and four Lok Sabha constituencies and yet be cosmopolitan in nature. People hailing from all districts in the State and almost every corner of the country made the city their abode decades ago, they contend. The stage was set for the launch of ‘Greater Hyderabad Rashtra Sadhana Samithi’ but the stern advice of the Chief Minister to leaders against issuing statements on Telangana put paid to their ambitions. Congress leaders, including office-bearers of Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, some local bodies’ representatives and leaders of the party’s frontal organisations even planned to hold a meeting in the city on January 24.
