CPI(M)’s State conference comes to an end

Special Correspondent

Political organisational report adopted with amendments

Buddhadeb emphasised drive towards greater industrialisation

Importance of providing rehabilitation packages reiterated

KOLKATA: The four-day delegate session of the 22nd State conference of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) ended here on Thursday with Biman Bose continuing as the Secretary of the newly constituted 88-member State Committee. Twelve new members were inducted into the body.

The highlights of the conference were the adoption, along with certain amendments, of the party’s political organisational report and the passing of a special resolution entitled “The Left Front Government, Panchayats, Muncipalities and Our Task.”

The drive towards greater industrialisation in the State aimed at ensuring greater job opportunities was emphasised by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who also underscored the need to consolidate the past successes in agriculture by raising the level of productivity, enhancing the earnings of farmers and creating more jobs in the sector.

Elaborating on the State’s development programme, Mr. Bhattacharjee reiterated the importance of providing adequate rehabilitation packages to those whose lands are to be acquired for setting up new industries. All of them will have to be provided alternative means of livelihood, he said.

The Chief Minister also pointed out that the past developments at Nandigram could not be taken as a reflection of the situation elsewhere in the State where there had been a considerable response from among the local people to the necessity of setting up of new industries and infrastructural projects.

Mr. Bose called for reinforcing unity among farmers and industrial workers and bolstering the campaign against communalism. He also emphasised the need to widen the party’s base by inducting more workers with an emphasis on the youth. It was important to strengthen unity among the Left forces and defeat the conspiracy hatched by reactionary forces against the party at the national level, he added.

The need to counter the reactionary forces bent on derailing the process of development and to continue to put pressure on the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government to pursue a foreign policy of non-alignment as elucidated in the Common Minimum Programme were endorsed in the course of the discussions.

Special mention was made to gear the party’s organisation in view of the panchayat polls in the State that are due in May.

Organisational matters and the CPI(M) performance in the State over the past three years were also reviewed at the conference. Delegates at the conference also noted with concern the rise in prices of essential commodities and the Centre’s policies aimed at destroying the public distribution system.
