Patil remarks: BJP seeks clarification

Sujay Mehdudia

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to clarify the government’s position on the recent comments by Home Minister Shivraj Patil on reservation for Muslims in educational institutions and jobs.

Talking to mediapersons here, BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said the BJP categorically rejected Mr. Patil’s views that by some ingenuity reservation could be given to Muslims. “Religion based reservations are totally unconstitutional and there is no such provision. For the last 60 years, this issue has been debated and sorted out with consensus in the country,” he added.

Mr. Prasad said the Minister’s comments were political brinkmanship at its worst. All this was being done with vote-bank politics in mind. “We urge the Prime Minister to intervene in the matter and clearly state the position of his government on the issue.”
