Farmers try to prevent work on SEZ
Staff Reporter
Kakinada: The controversy over special economic zone (SEZ) refused to die down as a large number of people, mostly farmers, once again tried to prevent the SEZ officials from carrying out fencing work at the project site on Thursday.
A large number of police personnel were deployed in the SEZ lands but the situation remained under control though the police had to use mild force to disperse the protestors who claimed that there were court strictures which prohibited any further work on the lands acquired for the SEZ.
However, the officials maintained that it was well within their powers to go ahead with the work. The people of Srirampuram and Ramanakkapeta villages in U.Kotthapalli villages stuck to their stand, saying that the officials cannot disregard the court orders. A top police officer told The Hindu that people who have given their lands to the SEZ for a price, were a peace-loving lot but the Leftists was instigating them .
