Animal Welfare Board team to film jallikattu across State

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has deputed a team to film jallikattu in various places across Tamil Nadu, according to Board chairman Maj. Gen.(retd.) R.M. Kharb. Talking to journalists here on Thursday, Dr. Kharb said the findings of the team would be presented before the Supreme Court next month.

Despite apex court directions on safety arrangements, more than 80 persons were injured in the event. The Board has allocated Rs.30 crore for 2008-09 to take up animal welfare activities in the country, the Chairman said.

Focus on sterilisation

The main focus would be on large-scale sterilisation of community dogs and modernisation of ghoshalas (cow shelters).

The Board would allot funds to select non-governmental organisations to take up animal welfare activities.

On modernisation of ghoshalas, the Chairman explained that workers would be trained in bio-gas generation, production of methane gas for fuel, electricity generation, vermi-composting, bio-pesticides, organic farming and plantation of medicinal herbs.

The Tamil Nadu government had initiated a sterilisation programme and would bear 50 per cent of the cost. An order has been issued.

Book released

Dr. Kharb released a book, ‘Let’s Share the World,’ authored by Geetha Rajagopal.
