‘Rise in violence against women’

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has expressed deep concern over the statistics presented by the National Crime Records Bureau, which showed an increase in violence against women.

Registered cases of rape increased by 5.5 per cent between 2005 and 2006, with Delhi reporting 4,134 cases in 2006 alone. The year 2008 witnessed outrageous assaults on girls in cities such as Mumbai and Chennai and also in rural areas, a statement issued by AIDWA said.

Two incidents of rape and murder of girls in rural Maharashtra were reported recently. There has also been a spate of cases of rape and molestation of women foreign tourists in Goa, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Though, the Ministry of Women and Child Development promised to make the punishment for molestation more stringent, this did not really address the problem. The responsibility of the law enforcement agencies and the judicial system should be seriously addressed, it said.

The government’s attitude was responsible for the fact that the conviction rate on rape cases continued to be abysmally low, it said and demanded that the government immediately introduce amendments and legislation and move towards providing legal safeguards for women.
