Thiruvananthapuram: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Thursday stressed on the need for establishing suicide prevention clinics in the State. Speaking at a function organised to felicitate Additional Director General of Police Siby Mathew for his recently published doctoral thesis on the economic and social causes of the high suicide rate in the State, he said suicides in the State had risen from 5,617 in 1986 to 9,026 in 2006. Mr. Balakrishnan suggested social intervention programmes to check the growing suicidal tendencies among Keralites. — Staff Reporter
