Meet reviews JNNURM projects Trial run at Brahmapuram in February KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation has approached the State government with a request to include the land acquisition process for a drinking water supply scheme in fast-track project. It is for the water supply scheme to bring in 100 MLD of water from Muvattupuzha river to the city suburbs that the civic body has sought the government support. Once the land acquisition is carried out by including the project in fast-track scheme, the process would be completed without the usual delay. This decision was taken at a weekly meeting convened to review the progress of the projects that were implemented under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in the corporation. Under the Rs.201-rore water supply scheme, the water drawn from the Muvattupuzha river would be brought to Maradu for treatment. From there, the treated water would be supplied to the city suburbs like Kumbalanghi, Kumbalam, Maradu, Chellanam, Nettoor and some areas of Thripunithura municipality. Though drinking water would not be directly supplied to the city areas from the project, the consumers in the city would be benefited as water presently supplied to the suburbs from the city would be saved for the city users after the commissioning of the project. The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is the implementing agency for the project. The corporation has also requested the State government to include the land acquisition for the Rs.78-crore sewerage treatment project, which will also be implemented by the KWA. Rehabilitation projectThe civic authorities also decided to approach the State government for permission for constructing an apartment complex at Azraj colony at Mattanchery for rehabilitating the 100-odd families residing in the area. The mission authorities had earlier sanctioned Rs.104.45 crore for the rehabilitation of the people, including those living in colonies in the city. The government approval was required for constructing the apartment complex as the land in which the colony was situated belonged to the State government. Brahmapuram projectThe State-level technical committee has to consider a proposal for purchasing support system for the solid waste treatment plant that is coming up at Brahmapuram. The support system includes a series of implements and equipment for the collection, segregation and transportation of solid waste from the city to the project site. The committee, which will meet on January 22, is expected to clear the proposal, the corporation officials said. The authorities are planning to inaugurate the Brahmapuram plant during the second week of February and the trial run is expected to begin on February 10.
