NEW DELHI: The Centre on Thursday informed the Delhi High Court that a Group of Ministers (GoM) was looking at a representation by residents’ welfare associations of some South Delhi colonies objecting to the construction of an elevated metro line between Central Secretariat and Badarpur here. Counsel for the Centre submitted before a Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice T. S. Thakur and Justice Aruna Suresh that the GoM would take up the representation for consideration before February 5. The Bench had on January 3 suggested to the Union Government not to make the construction of an elevated line a “prestige issue and consider the representation dispassionately”. The welfare associations have through a bunch of petitions objected to the construction of the line on the ground of violation of privacy of the residents and noise pollution. The proposed elevated link will pass through Greater Kailash, Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Kailash Colony, Jangpura and Kalkaji. The residents of colonies between Jangpura and Kalkaji also expressed apprehension that the proposed link would damage the green cover in their areas, besides adding to noise pollution. Though the Court has refused to stay the construction, it has questioned the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s insistence on the elevated line. The Court has asked why the DMRC is digressing from its motto of providing an underground metro rail service.
