BANGALORE: Over 200 annual flowering plants and over a hundred winter flowering plants will be on display in the Republic Day flower show at Lal Bagh starting from Saturday.

Horticulture Director K. Ramakrishnappa told presspersons that an added feature to this year’s show would be addition of flowering plants from Ooty and Nandi Hills. In the light of region around Bangalore being identified as a zone for horticulture crops, the show would provide more technical details about the crops as well as create awareness on horticulture, he added.

As part of the eight-day show, competitions in Ikebana, vegetable carvings, Pushpa Bharathi, Bonsai, Dutch flower arrangements, Thai art, Janur, cut flowers and dry flower arrangements had been organised.

In the garden section, Defence establishments, public sector undertakings, information technology companies, banks and hotels would be vying for the top spot.

While 529 participated in the horticulture show during the last year, a record 591 participants had registered for this year’s Republic Day flower show. Similarly, 325 participants had registered for Ikebena, Pushpa Bharathi, Bonasai and vegetable carvings this year whereas 302 took part last year.

Security

The department has received 720 entries for the main show at Glass House as against 615 during the last year. To ensure security during the show, special security arrangements have been put in place. Door frame metal detectors, hand metal detectors and cameras will be deployed at several places in the zoological gardens.

Similarly, regular walkers have prohibited from bringing their vehicles inside the gardens from January 20 to 27.
