Awareness programmes are being conducted among students, SHG members 500 women masons trained in the construction of low cost toilets Krishnagiri: The district administration has drawn up an ambitious plan to make Krishnagiri a fully sanitised district by April 2008. Steps have been initiated to construct 2.5 lakh individual household toilets in the district at an outlay of Rs.40 crore, Collector Santhosh Babu has said. Out of the total 337 panchayats in the district, 105 panchayats have been declared as fully sanitised. The Total Sanitation Campaign seeks to eliminate the practice of open defaecation through the construction of toilets in households and schools, anganwadi centres and community halls. Mr. Babu said that awareness programmes were being conducted among school children, SHG members, panchayati raj institutions and government field functionaries on the ill effects of open defaecation and lack of personal hygiene. Information Education Communication (IEC) materials were prominently displayed at ration shops, schools, colleges and panchayat offices to promote awareness on sanitation and hygiene education among different age groups. About 500 women masons had been trained in the construction of low-cost eco-friendly toilets. Apart from this rural sanitary marts had been established in three blocks to provide materials required for the construction of toilets. These activities resulted in significant progress in construction of toilets. UNICEF and the district administration would provide gold medals to different stakeholders such as panchayat presidents, non-governmental organisations, school headmasters and students and self-help group members who are involved in sanitation and hygiene promotion activites in the district. A district level committee headed by the Collector would review the applications and ascertain the initiatives taken by the concerned stakeholder. The TSC functionaries would visit the village and recommend the District Collector for awarding the gold medal. The medals would be presented by the Collector at the Republic Day function.
