‘Farm sector was neglected by the TDP Government’

‘Government introducing new agriculture policy’

Chittoor: The Congress Government under Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy is giving top priority for agriculture, which was neglected by the TDP Government, said R. Chenga Reddy, Minister for Law and Technical Education.

He was addressing a meeting here on Friday held in connection with the felicitation of best farmers and officers under Sankranti Puraskaralu.

He said that several facilities have been provided for farmers to improve their livelihood. The Government has provided Rs. 850 crore for agriculture in the 2007-08, against Rs. 85 crore of the TDP Government, the Minister said. Further, the interest rate on the loans given by the national banks for farmers was reduced to 7 per cent from 14 per cent and to 5 per cent from 11 per cent on cooperative loans. The Government is introducing new agriculture policy to uplift the economic standard of the farmers, he said.

Even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has complemented Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for implementing several developmental and welfare activities, which were not on the agenda of other States in the country, he said.

The construction of Galeru Nagari, Handri Neeva, Telugu Ganga and Paleru projects will solve irrigation and drinking water needs of people in the district, he said.

Collector S.S. Rawat presided over the meeting. Deputy Speaker G. Kuthuhulamma, Medical and Health Minister Galla Aruna Kumari, R. Gopinath, MLC, participated.
