BELLARY: The Karnataka State Forest Department Daily Wages Employees’ Association, along with the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board Employees’ Association and the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) have strongly condemned the proposed move of the State Government to reduce daily wages from Rs. 142.65 to Rs. 81.30. Forest Department Daily Wage Employees’ Association C. Raghunath told presspersons here on Friday that the move had come as a shock to the people and that it would affect over 20,000 employees working in various departments. He said that at a time when daily wage employees were not given the new wages (Rs. 142.65) which had come into effect from April 1, 2007, the proposed cut, that too to the tune of Rs. 61.35 a day, was disappointing. He said a memorandum had been forwarded to Governor Rameshwar Thakur urging him not to have the move implemented. They have urged him to pass orders directing implementation of wages announced on April 1, 2007 with retrospective effect. Mr. Raghunath spoke about the plight of the “pourakarmikas” for whom payment of wages had been restricted to only Rs. 1,800 a month. “It is a clear case of injustice being meted out to them as other daily wage employees in the urban local bodies are paid Rs. 3,800 a month. We demand that everyone be paid Rs. 142.65 a day with retrospective effect,” he said.
