Chitradurga: Director of the State unit of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission K. Mohan Raju has said that to ensure self-sufficiency and financial stability, women should make use of schemes offered by the Commission. Mr. Raju was presiding over the district-level awareness camp on Rural Employment Generation organised by the commission here on Friday. He said the Union Government, through schemes such as the Prime Minister’s Rozgar Yojana and the Swarna Jayanti Sampoorna Grameen Yojna aimed at enhancing the economic status of the rural people by encouraging them to adopt self-employment. He appealed to them to seek the help of Commission on how to get help in setting up cottage industries. Zilla panchayat president Geeta Nandini Gowda, in her inaugural address, stressed on the need for educating the rural poor, particularly women. She said literacy boosted the confidence of women. “Many women still feel hesitant to leave their houses and venture into business. Their confinement within the four walls deprives them of the opportunity to earn well,” she said. Several nationalised banks offered financial assistance for setting up cottage industries, she added. In the absence of awareness, the people were not taking advantage of the benefits, she said. District industries centre Joint Director N.C. Nagaraj Chauhan was present.
