CHENNAI: The Pongal holiday crowd on the East Coast Road was in for a pleasant surprise this year as Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation’s (TTDC) Rain Drop Boat House at Mudaliar Kuppam on the road has a new attraction – two aqua bikes.

The water bikes, which were introduced coinciding with the Pongal festivity, have been imported at the cost of Rs.12.50 lakh, TTDC Managing Director and Director of Tourism M. Rajaram said.

The three-seater bikes, including the driver seat, provide an adventurous experience. The tariff, for the five minute, joy ride on the water bike is Rs.350 per head.

A bus load of foreign tourists, who were on a tour of South India covering Madurai, Thanjavur, Kochi, had a first-hand experience of the bikes at the Boat House on Thursday as they made a unscheduled stop en route to Puducherry. Tourism Secretary V. Irai Anbu said the Rain Drop Boat House was among the 10 boating yards in the State which were being upgraded .
