Tourism Minister says there is a plan to set up a cashew museum in the city

KOLLAM: Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan inaugurated the 17th Kollam Flower and Fruit Show at the Asramam guest house complex on Friday.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Balakrishnan said if land was made available, the Tourism Department would open a cashew museum in Kollam.

He said a master plan had been prepared for the development of tourism in the district. The commissioning of a cargo port here would boost the tourism prospects. A sum of Rs.1 crore had been allocated to restore the guest house. More funds would be allocated if need arose.

Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan presided. District Collector A. Shajehan welcomed the gathering.

The 10-day flower show is being organised by the Kollam Agri-Horticultural and Zoological Society, in association with the Kollam Corporation, the district panchayat, the district administration and the District Tourism Promotion Council. A food festival has been organised in connection with the show.

The inaugural function was preceded by a flower rally from the Anandawalleshwaran temple grounds to the flower show venue.

The show comprises more than 50 stalls and several pavilions. An ornamental fish pavilion is a highlight. Mayor N. Padmalochanan inaugurated the pavilion.

The Forest Department has also set up a pavilion. Cultural programmes will be held on all days of the show. The programmes will be inaugurated by the former editor of Janayugam Thengamam Balakrishnan on Saturday.

Entry to the show is restricted by tickets priced at Rs.15 for adults and Rs.10 for children.

Those coming in groups from educational institutions need pay only Rs.5 per head.
