Report sought on student’s death

Staff Reporter

Cabinet will decide on compensation for Yetu’s family, says Baby

KUTTIPPURAM: Education Minister M.A. Baby said here on Friday that he had directed the Higher Secondary Directorate to conduct an inquiry into the drowning of Yetu Krishnan, a student from Kollam, in the Bharatapuzha during the State Higher Secondary School Youth Festival held here.

He said although the reason for the death was obvious, the director was asked to investigate and submit a report. He said the death threw light on the necessity of students learning swimming.

Mr. Baby said the government would take a decision on the amount of compensation to be paid to Yetu Krishnan’s family in the next Cabinet meeting. He had discussed the matter with Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan. The Chief Minister would declare the compensation after the meeting.

The Minister said Yetu Krishnan had stayed at a place not allotted by the organisers. Although the organisers had asked all participants to give details about their requirements for stay, the contingent from Kollam district had submitted in writing that they had found accommodation on their own.

More restrictions

Mr. Baby said Yetu Krishnan and his friends had stayed at Thirunavaya without the knowledge or consent of the organisers. He said the government would consider imposing more restrictions on the accommodation of participants in the school youth festivals.

He said the problems projected to arise from unified youth festivals for high school and higher secondary schools from next year would be discussed at length.

The Minister said that drastic changes were needed in the way the competitions were being judged in the school youth festivals.

However, he said the judges alone should not be blamed for the errors in the evaluation. Consecutive participation of judges would be avoided from next year.
