CPI “deeply concerned” at price rise

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India on Friday expressed “deep concern” at the “alarming price rise” of essential commodities.

Condemning the Centre’s “inaction,” the party called upon the government to take effective steps, together with State Governments, immediately to curb the rise, restore the public distribution system, stop banks from advancing loans for food trading and stringently apply the Essential Commodities Act.

As a long term strategy, the Centre should ensure higher agricultural productivity, take steps for adequate food procurement and offer remunerative prices to farmers.

Resolution

By another resolution, the party urged the Centre to see to it that work on the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project resumed and that it was completed within the stipulated timeframe.

Referring to the stay granted by the Supreme Court on the project, the resolution stated that the suspension of work had caused “great concern” to people and led to escalation of project cost.

Ration quota

The CPI’s national council also called for the immediate restoration of the quantity of allotment of rice and wheat made to Kerala under the public distribution system.

The Centre had reduced one lakh tonnes of rice and 75,000 tonnes of wheat for the last two months. “Due to the anti-people policy of the Centre, Kerala is facing a grave situation. The price of rice has shot up. More than 14,000 ration retail shops are on the verge of closure.”
