Lalithakala Akademi awards announced

KOCHI: The State awards for painting, sculpture, photography and cartoon were announced here on Friday by C.N. Karunakaran, Chairman, Kerala Lalithakala Akademi.

V.K. Jayan bagged the award in sculpture for an untitled work, while in painting, V. Madhu (Debate-I), Mathai K.T. (Climactticus-6), Siddharthan (Beyond the Iron Grill) and Shyam Prasad (Lamentations) were named winners.

Joshy Manjummel was selected for the photography award for his work titled Our Home, while Baiju Paulose became the first to get the State award in the cartoon category, which was instituted this year. An untitled work got him the award.

The award winners will be given Rs. 15,000 in cash and certificates at a function at the Durbar Hall on February 7, where an exhibition of the winning works will be held.

Honourable mention

The akademi has selected five works for honourable mention awards in painting and sculpture and two each in photography and cartoon. Each award comprises Rs. 5,000 in cash and certificates.

Biju C. Bharat, Jalajamol P.S., P.P. Rajendran and Sujil S. were named for honourable mention awards in painting, while A. Guruprasad got the award for sculpture. Sally Thankappan and T.J. Varghese were selected in photography, while E. Suresh and T.K. Sujith got the award in cartoon.

Five artistes were also given special mention awards for paintings and sculpture. The award comprises Rs. 3,000 in cash and certificate. The winners are Dileep Divar for sculpture; and Jiljith K, Pradeep P.P., Saju R. and Sajeev P.A. for painting.

For selecting the winners, the akademi had considered 191 paintings and sculptures by 150 artists; 162 photographs by 108 people; and 79 cartoons by 34 people. For the painting and sculpture section, the judges were R.M. Palaniyyappan, artist and Secretary, Lalitha Kala Akademi, Chennai Regional Centre; Gayathri Madhu Desai from Dharwad Fine Arts College, Karnataka; and Anil Kumar, art critic.

Sivan, photographer, and Firoz Babu were among the judges in the photography section. Sebastian Paul, MP, and M.P. Surendran, journalist, were among those who judged the cartoons.
