KUTTIPPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram district won the championship at the State higher secondary youth festival that concluded here on Friday evening. In a tight fight lasting four days, Plus Two students of Thiruvananthapuram emerged champions, scoring 368 points. Teams from Kannur and Kozhikode districts were close behind with 364 points each. Thrissur and Palakkad districts shared the third position with 357 points, followed by Ernakulam with 350 points and Kottayam with 343 points. Malappuram district secured 340 points, Alappuzha 338 points, Kasaragod 318 points, Kollam 289 points, Wayanad 283 points, Pathanamthitta 278 points and Idukki 260 points. SEGV Higher Secondary School, Kidangannur, Pathanamthitta, was the school that secured the maximum points – 83. In the second position was MAMM Higher Secondary School, Kumaramangalam, Idukki, with 71 points. St. George Higher Secondary School, Muthalamadu, Idukki, had 63 points, followed by Silver Hills Higher Secondary School, Kozhikode, with 60 points and PKM Higher Secondary School, Edarikkode, with 58 points. There were a total of 2,226 A grades in the festival. Boys secured 1,248 A grades and girls 978 A grades.Education Minister M.A. Baby inaugurated the valedictory function. Mr. Baby said a proper calendar would be charted for school youth festivals every year. He said the government would consider training students in swimming in the wake of the drowning of a student, Yetu Krishnan, in the Bharatapuzha on Wednesday. A participant in the youth festival from Kollam, Yetu drowned in the river while bathing near Navamukunda temple at Tirunavaya. The Minister later told mediapersons that Yetu died as he did not know swimming. T.K. Hamza, MP, presided over the function. K.T. Jaleel and V. Sasikumar, MLAs, offered felicitation. Mr. Baby released a souvenir titled ‘Perar’ by giving the first copy to Mr. Jaleel.
