KOLLAM: Minister for Home Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said here on Friday that the government was planning to purchase a helicopter for the Fire and Rescue Services Department. Inaugurating the new building of the Chamakada station of the Fire and Rescue Services, he said the Cabinet had given the approval for the purpose and the formalities for the purchase had begun. The helicopter purchase is part of the programme for modernising the Fire and Rescue Services operations in the State. The government has charted out a comprehensive programme for the modernisation of the department, he said. This will include an allocation of Rs.65 lakh for purchase of three sets of hydraulic rescue equipment and Rs.25 lakh for purchase of chain saws. The Minister said when the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government came to power, there were 1,048 vacancies in the department. Recruitment to fill up all the vacancies was made. Those recruited are now undergoing training at the Fire Force Academy, he said.
