dated January 19, 1958: Aims of Congress

In his presidential address to the 63rd session of the Indian National Congress in Pragyotishpur on January 18, Mr. U.N. Dhebar appealed to Congressmen to give their unflinching loyalty to the ideals of the Congress, which had pledged itself to the goal of a democratic socialist co-operative commonwealth. He called upon Congressmen in all walks of life to eliminate the distance between profession and practice and emphasised the need for speeding up land reforms in the country before the end of the Second Five-Year Plan. The Congress President pleaded for the liquidation of “casteism, communalism, provincialism and all similar sect-ridden influences”, in accordance with Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings.
