Theni qualifies for semifinals after tying with Cuddalore

Tirunelveli: Theni tied with Cuddalore in the quarterfinals of the ICL Mahaveer Chand Memorial Trophy inter-district under-13 cricket tournament at Sankarnagar here on Friday. But Theni qualified for the semifinals by losing lesser number of wickets.

The scores: Quarterfinals: Theni 153 for seven in 30 overs (Vineeth Kumar 35, Karthik three for 23) tied with Cuddalore 153 in 10 overs (Aravindan 40, Venkatesh four for 19). Theni won on lesser number of wickets lost; Madurai 149 in 29.2 overs (A. Prasanna Venkatesh 70, Amirudh 38, Ganesh Lingam three for 30) lost to Thiruvallur 150 for six in 29.4 overs (Akshay P. Rai 79); Kanchipuram 171 for three in 30 overs (U. Vishal 81, S. Viswesh 64 not out) bt Erode 122 for seven in 30 overs (Harikish three for 13); Ramanathapuram 66 in 26.5 overs (Kaushik three for 11) lost to Coimbatore 67 for three in 10.1 overs (Hari Nishanth 45 not out).

Mohanraj shines

At Karaikudi, a fine spell by medium-pacer Mohanraj (eight for five, including a hat-trick) helped Majestic CC (Madurai) crush SNS CE (Coimbatore) by 188 runs and enter the quarterfinals of the 25th annual CECRI State-level Twenty20 cricket tournament on Friday.

Calicut in final

At Tirunelveli, defending champion Calicut and runner-up Punjabi will clash in the final of the all-India inter-university women’s kho-kho tournament.

In the semifinals on Thursday, Calicut beat Mumbai 11-10 while Punjabi beat Pune 9-8.

At Paramakudi, Southern Railway (Chennai) beat South Zone Police (Madurai) 72-57 in the Arya Vysya HSS Trophy State-level basketball tournament on Friday.

The results:

Southern Railway (Chennai) 72 (Venkatesh 21) bt South Zone Police (Madurai) 57 (Dayalan 14); Loyala College (Chennai) 58 (Sathish Kumar 14) bt AJBC (Chennai) 53 (Bopanna 15).

Uma Maheswaran wins

At Madurai, P. Uma Maheswaran of Arul Malar Matriculation HSS won the above-14 title in the district-level chess tournament organised recently.

At Dindigul, Eriodu CC defeated Vaigai CC by eight wickets in the Canara Bank-DDCA second division league recently.

Postponed

At Madurai, the ninth State-level hockey tournament for the BJPM Trophy, sponsored by Hi-Tech Arai and Bharat Petroleum and organised by Thirunagar Hockey Club, which was scheduled to commence at Madurai on February 6 has been postponed to February 20.

Hockey league

At Coimbatote, the PSG Tech Hockey Club of the PSG College of Technology will conduct the second Tech hockey league for the Major Dhyan Chand Memorial Trophy at its premises here from January 19 to February 2.

Twelve engineering colleges of the Coimbatore Zone have confirmed participation for the tournament, which will be inaugurated by R. Rudramoorthy, Principal, PSG Tech and PSG Polytechnic College, on January 19 at 4 p.m.

Ball badminton

At Salem, the inter-district ball badminton championship for men and women will be held at the Elambillai HSS courts on January 19 and 20.

Saravanan shines

At Thanjavur, S. Saravanan scored four goals as Bharathidasan University thrashed Tumkur University 10-0 in the inaugural match of the South Zone inter-University hockey tournament here on Friday.

The results: Bharathidasan 10 (S. Saravanan 4, K. Ethiraj 2, A. Mohammed Safiullah 1, A. Manikandan 1, R. Prabhu Rajasekaran 1, K. Anbilraj 1) bt Tumkur 0.
