KOCHI: Kerala will have its own schools football league shortly. The State, which has gained good marks from the Asian Football Confederation, has decided to start a district schools league in seven districts. The under-11 boys’ league, which will be funded by the Kerala State Sports Council and jointly organised with the Kerala Football Association, will have eight schools in each district, said T.P. Dasan, the State Sports Council President here on Friday evening. The league is part of the AFC’s Vision India project. “The AFC believes that Kerala has a great potential to become a football giant,” said Annathurai Ranganathan, AFC Development Officer, Grassroots and Youth Development, after a workshop for coaches and physical education teachers here this evening. “In many places, people are talking about development of senior players. It is good that Kerala is looking at the grassroots and investing in children,” said the Malaysian. After the district leagues which will involve 56 teams in all, the top two schools of each district will clash in another league. Two CBSE schools, the Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya (Kakkanad) and Navodaya School (Neriyamangalam), figure among the teams selected for the Ernakulam League. Ernakulam league teams: TD HS (Mattancherry), Sacred Heart (Thevara), St. Albert’s (Ernakulam), Rajagiri HSS (Kalamassery), Govt HSS (Kadayiruppu), Ashram HSS (Perumbavoor), Navodaya (Neriyamangalam), Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya (Kakkanad). – Principal Correspondent
