Irrigation tank repair work to be taken up

Collector asks Public Works Department officials to prepare list

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Virudhunagar Collector V. Chandrasekaran has asked Public Works Department officials to prepare a list of irrigation tanks that required desilting and repair of sluices.

Addressing farmers at their grievance day meeting, the Collector said that based on the estimates prepared by them, the district administration would send a report to the State Government seeking special funds to implement the works.

Stating that the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme would be implemented in the district from April, the Collector said that work on deepening tanks and renovation of supply channels could be taken up under the scheme.

The district administration had sent a proposal to repair the shutters of Anaikuttam Dam at a cost of Rs. 116 lakh, he added.

Following requests from farmers, the Collector ordered the opening of three direct procurement centres for paddy at Kariyapatti, Seithur and Watrap. The district administration has also sought subsidy from the Coconut Development Board at Cochin to provide micro-nutrients for its coconut farmers.

The Head of Cotton Research Station at Srivilliputtur, Ramalingam, demonstrated the functioning of a machine used for thrashing maize. Revenue Divisional Officers B. Ganesan, and O. Venkatesan, Joint Director (Agriculture) Gandhiraja and Personal Assistant to Collector (Agriculture) Balasubramaniam were present.
