Hunt on in State for active LTTE supporters
K.T. Sangameswaran
CHENNAI: The ‘Q’ branch police have launched a hunt in Chennai and other parts of the State for those providing active support to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
This follows the arrest of seven Sri Lankan Tamils residing on the outskirts of Chennai, who had assisted a Tiger intelligence wing operative for procuring raw materials to be smuggled to the island nation.
The special unit is also examining the documents of the seven Sri Lankan Tamils to find out if they had registered with the police or not. They were residing at Velachery, Madipakkam and Puzhuthivakkam for the past few years, Superintendent of Police, ‘Q’ branch, M. Ashok Kumar, told The Hindu when contacted.
Investigators propose to move the court seeking police custody of Thambidurai Parameswaran of the LTTE intelligence wing, arrested on Wednesday night. Besides other material, the police seized seven cell phones from the arrested persons. Efforts are on to identify their contacts. It is alleged that Parameswaran, with the assistance of others, was trying to procure iron balls, plastic granules, two wheelers and boats for the Tigers. He had also made arrangements with boat owners of Rameswaram to smuggle the contraband to Sri Lanka.
