‘Abolish Bharat Ratna’

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The government should abolish the Bharat Ratna award, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy said here on Friday. He was speaking to presspersons on the ongoing controversy over the highest civilian award.

He said the Janata Party government in 1977 had discontinued the award but it was later reinstated by the Supreme Court.

He said that public persons need not be given such awards.

“Like monarchy, State awards are not in keeping with the democratic spirit of the country,” Dr. Swamy said.
