CHENNAI: The second edition of the T.S. Santhanam memorial National veterans’ tennis championships will be held from January 21 to 26, under the auspices of All India Tennis Association and Tamil Nadu Tennis Association. The venues are the Mylapore Club, Madras Cricket Club, Egmore-TNTA Stadium and the Gandhi Nagar Club. Speaking to newspersons on Thursday, Mr. Ram Santhanam, Chairman and Managing Director, Wheels India Ltd., recalled the passion the late Santhanam had for tennis and the numerous visits he made to Wimbledon to watch the likes of Ken Rosewall and Ramanathan Krishnan play. He was an ardent fan of sports in general and tennis in particular tennis, said Mr. Ram Santhanam. The tournament, sponsored by the TVS Group of Companies, including Brakes India Ltd., Madras Auto Service and Sundaram Finance, will offer prize money of Rs. 5.5 lakhs. Good responseProf. P. Narasimhan, the chief referee of the championship, informed that three men’s events (+45 years, +55 and +65 singles and doubles) would be held from the 247 entries that were received. The singles winners will receive Rs. 18,700 and 70 AITA points in all three categories while the runners-up will get Rs. 9,900 and 50 AITA points. Prominent names such as Rakesh Kohli (Uttar Pradesh, +45), R.I. Singh (Delhi, +55), S. Parekh (Maharashtra, +65), V.T. Raghunath (Karnataka, +45) and T. Sridhar (Andhra Pradesh, +65) are taking part.
