Bangalore: What do you get when you put together a heavy rock band like Parikrama, an iconic band like Strings and a Bollywood film star, not to mention a star-studded audience of about two cricketers? Between the melodious and very charming Pakistani band and the highly energetic rockers, the audience at Palace Grounds on Friday evening got a little bit of everything that they could have asked for. Strings was truly in its elements, with the charming vocalist Faisal Kapadia keeping the audience in a musical trance, with popular numbers like Dhani, Anjane and Duur. Supported by Bilal Maqsood’s on the strings, Strings managed to engage the audience in their characteristic manner using every gimmick in the book, from waving mobiles in the dark to picking on those nostalgic chords by singing a medley of old Bollywood numbers. A large section of the audience had turned up to watch their favourite film star Saif Ali Khan, who performed on stage as supporting Rhythm guitarist to Parikrama. With ample support from the band’s guitarist, a seemingly nervous Saif managed to punch some chords with rock numbers like “Highway to Hell” and “Smoke on the water.” Die-hard Parikrama fans would rather have given this gag a miss, because between blatant publicity stunts to please sponsors and honouring visiting cricketers, they did not seem to have too much time to themselves. “Strings were impeccable and made the concert worth it. I was a little curious about what Saif would do but it was a rather plain performance from his side,” said Sandhya M.
