Bangalore: President of the Janata Dal (United) Sharad Yadav on Friday expressed his displeasure over the lack of commitment on the part of any political party in rescuing the farmers from committing suicide all over the country as they were unable to bear the debt burden and denial of remunerative prices for their produce. Speaking to reporters after attending a meeting of the State unit leaders and office-bearers here, Mr. Yadav said that farmers were put to a lot hardship by the wrong policies and programmes of the governments, both at the Centre and the States. Every three minutes one farmer was ending life in the country. Quoting the Agriculture Editor of The Hindu, P. Sainath to buttress his views on the sufferings of the farmers, Mr. Yadav said it was this newspaper, known for its objectivity and the journalist for his elaborate study on the entire gamut of the problems, that the seriousness of the issue was highlighted, threadbare. But, no political party had the same sincerity in reaching out to the unfortunate section of the rural society, he added. He said that the Janata Dal (United) had taken up the cause of the farmers, particularly its opposition to the special economic zones and allowing the MNCs into the retail business, destroying the farmers.
