THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has initiated moves to identify 16,000 hectares of land in three districts for distribution to tribal families and other traditional forest dwellers. Briefing mediapersons after a meeting with District Collectors, Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes A.K. Balan said a three-tier system would be put in place to identify the land and the beneficiaries. He said the move was part of the implementation of the scheduled tribes and other traditional forest dwellers (recognition of forest rights) Act that was adopted by Parliament last year. He said it would provide a permanent solution to the tribal land issue in Wayanad, Palakkad and Idukki districts. Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran participated in the meeting. As many as 22,000 landless families and 31,000 with nominal landholdings are expected to benefit.
