“Delhi-Gurgaon stretch of highway to be opened on January 23”

Staff Reporter

Certain ‘safety related components’ are yet to be put in place

‘Work is continuing round the clock to complete all remaining jobs’

According to NHAI website, the project has already been completed

NEW DELHI: Stirring into action after a residents’ welfare association “inaugurated” the Dwarka-Palam flyover this past week, the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry along with the National Highways Authority of India on Friday reviewed the status of the Delhi-Gurgaon stretch of National Highway 8 deciding that “all requirements would be satisfied and the highway in its entirety would be opened on January 23”. The review indicated that though major works on the road were completed on December 31, certain “safety related components” were yet to be put in place. These safety measures include provision of crash barriers, completion of left in-left out configuration at Kapashera, removal of scaffoldings, back-up power supply for street lighting and toll operations.

The report also said that work was continuing round the clock to complete all the remaining jobs by Friday to enable an independent engineer to conduct the mandatory safety, reliability and integrity tests.

However, People’s Action president Sanjay Kaul said: “NHAI is claiming that they weren’t waiting for any VIP to inaugurate the flyover and that there were certain ‘technical/ safety reasons for the delay. If heavy earthmovers can be allowed on the flyover, then I don’t see what problem a Maruti would create. The entire 36 km highway has been made functional except for this stretch.”

According to People’s Action executive member Varinder Arora, the dysfunctional flyover caused huge traffic jams that compelled the RWA to literally take things into their own hands.
