CHANDIGARH: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) have agreed to jointly conduct a scientific study to save the most sacred shrine of Sikhs, Harmandar Sahib (Golden Temple), from damage caused by increasing pollution in its vicinity. An official release quoting Punjab Minister for Science, Technology and Environment Bikram Singh Majithia here said that CPCB assistance had been sought keeping in view its vast experience, especially while suggesting measures for protection of the Taj Mahal. The Minister said the Punjab Government is committed to protecting and preserving all the heritage sites as they are symbols of a glorious past and source of inspiration for future generations. “The Government is concerned about the increasing levels of pollution, especially air, in areas surrounding the shrine. The entire Temple complex is an example of architectural skills and treasured some precious paintings as well as other symbolic heritage associated with the lives of the Sikh Gurus,” he added. According to initial studies, the probable reasons identified were transportation, industrial and commercial activities, huge buildings and emissions around the complex. The use of fuel in the ‘Langar’ within the shrine complex contributes to the degradation.
