Dalai Lama hails firming up of ties

Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD: The Dalai Lama, the spiritual head of the Tibetans, has welcomed the strengthening of relations between India and China in the wake of the official visit to China by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and said “genuine friendship based on trust” was essential and was also in the interest of Tibet.

Speaking at a “question-answer” session at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, after giving a talk on “ethics in business,” the Dalai Lama said good relations between the two countries which together had a population of three billion people was a “must,” particularly with both the nations being nuclear powers.

“Tibet still backward”

He said an independent Tibet was not in the interest of Tibetans as Tibet, by and large had still remained very backward.

He said every Tibetan was looking forward to a modern Tibet which would be possible only if it remained within the Republic of China, he said.
