Kochi: The Kerala Muslim Jama-ath Council has protested against the State government’s move to implement the Supreme Court directive on making registration of marriages at local bodies compulsory. At a press conference, A. Pookunju, general secretary of the council, said that the enforcement of the ruling was impracticable. Muslims had every right to conduct marriages in accordance with the Muslim Personal Law (Shariath) Application Act. The secretary said the government should enact a law in such a way that the religious communities could conduct marriage ceremonies in accordance with their personal laws and the local bodies could register such marriages on the basis of documents sent by the respective community organisations.
