PUDUCHERRY: The presidents of village panchayats in Puducherry and Karaikal regions have been invited to a two-day workshop on the status of Panchayati Raj in the Union Territory, which would begin here on Sunday. The workshop would be held by the Holistic approach for People’s Empowerment (HOPE), a Puducherry-based non-governmental organisation, and the Hyderabad-based Centre for World Solidarity. According to a release, the objective of the workshop was to discuss and review the functioning of panchayats in the Union Territory after the local body elections held in 2006, evolve strategies to strengthen the grassroots-level organisations and share the practices and constraints on the functioning of panchayat system in the neighbouring States.
