Deve Gowda to meet leaders from all taluks and blocks individually District office-bearers to submit resignation to help revamp the party GULBARGA: The former Prime Minister and president of the Janata Dal (Secular) H.D. Deve Gowda, accompanied by party working president N. Narayanaswamy and president Mirajuddin Patel, will undertake a two-day review of the party’s network in Gulbarga district from January 21. Their visit assumes significance against the backdrop of a major rebellion within the party after it withdrew support to the seven-day Government headed by B.S. Yeddyurappa. The party made inroads into the Congress bastions in the 2004 elections in the district, winning five of the total 13 seats. Two MLAs, including a party rebel, joined the party as associate members, taking the total strength of the party MLAs to seven in the district. However, of these seven, only one, Vishwanath Patil Hebbal, who had won from Chitapur Assembly constituency, is still with the party, while the rest have quit. While Veerbasantreddy Mudnal, who contested as a party rebel from Yadgir Assembly constituency in the 2004 elections has already joined the BJP, four MLAs, including the former Minister Sharanabasappa Dharshanapur (Shahapur), M.Y. Patil (Afzalpur) and Raju Gowda (Surpur), have identified themselves with former Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash. The other two MLAs, Vaijnath Patil, who was expelled from the party for revolting against Mr. Gowda, and B.R. Patil, who associated himself with the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, are expected to join the Congress. Mr. Gowda will meet senior leaders from all taluks and blocks to “assess the damage caused to the party due to the quitting of senior leaders .” It is learnt that office-bearers of the district unit of the party have decided to submit their resignation en masse to Mr. Gowda to enable him revamp the party in the district .
