National Literacy Mission has allotted Rs. 60 lakh for the programme Master trainers to be identified Krishnagiri: The district administration has begun a massive exercise to train as many as 7,000 literate volunteers for implementation of a special literacy programme for women in Krishnagiri district. Participating in a programme here on Saturday, Collector Santhosh Babu said that a total of 69,700 illiterate women would be trained in 120 centres across the district under the programme. As per the 2001 census, the male literacy rate in the district was 69 per cent while the female literacy rate was 49 per cent as against the average of 55 per cent. The programme plans to educate neo-literates and illiterates in the age group of 18 to 35 within a timeframe of six months. Mr. Babu said that the National Literacy Mission (NLM) had allotted a sum of Rs. 60 lakh for implementation of the programme. The project would be imparted through a three-tier training programme. To begin with, master trainers would be identified who would train the animators of SHGs and volunteers. A five-day training programme would be conducted for the trainers by master trainers so that the second-level trainers were fully educated on the methodology of training the volunteers. The volunteers would be issued certificates on completion of training. The main objective of the programme was to enhance female literacy rate on par with that of men. The Collector exhorted SHGs to initiate steps to enroll all out-of-school children in their panchayats in appropriate alternative schools. Senior officials were present.
