Says Congress has started political violence in Kannur Accuses Centre of weakening public distribution system KANNUR: Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary and Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan has said that factionalism in the party State unit will end after the party State conference at Kottayam. Inaugurating the delegates’ session of the three-day district conference of the party here on Saturday, Mr. Vijayan said efforts to end factionalism with the assistance of the party central leadership and on the basis of the party guidelines were successful. “Fitting reply”The completion of 13 district conferences was a fitting reply to those who launched a disinformation campaign. The CPI(M) would survive the anti-party propaganda by vested interest groups, he said. Taking strong exception to Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy’s statement that the crime rate in the State recorded a growth after the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government came to power, Mr. Vijayan said the crime rate in 2006 was lower than that in 2005 when Mr. Chandy was the Chief Minister. Mr. Vijayan said that the LDF government had performed well in various sectors including health and law and order. He said that the Congress in the State was instigating the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to carry out violence against the CPI(M) workers. Third front The CPI(M) State secretary said that the United Progressive Alliance government backed by the Left parties was deviating from the common minimum programme that formed the basis of the Left parties’ constructive support. The party was exploring the possibility of forming a third front at the Centre, he said. The Left opposition to the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal was to help the country pursue an independent foreign policy, he said . He also said that the Centre’s weakening of the public distribution system led to steep increase in the price of food and other essential commodities. The Bharatiya Janata Party was gaining strength in the country by projecting its Hindutva agenda, he said. CPI(M) leaders, including Ministers Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, P.K. Sreemathy, M.A. Baby, P.K. Gurudasan and A.K. Balan were present at the delegates’ session. The other leaders present were LDF convener Vaikom Viswan, P. Karunakaran, MP, E.P. Jayarajan, T. Sivadasa Menon, M.V. Govindan, M.C. Josephine, Jayarajan, M. Prakashan and party district secretary P. Sasi.
