Jayamala, B.L. Shankar get Ph.Ds

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Former Chairman of the Legislative Council B.L. Shankar and actor Jayamala obtained Ph.Ds in political science on Saturday from Bangalore University.

Mr. Shankar, a Congress leader, got the Ph.D. for his thesis on “Indian Parliament: Changing Profile”, while Ms. Jayamala’s topic was “Rehabilitation of Destitute Women: A Study of Administrative System”.

Mr. Shankar told presspersons that on an average he spent four hours a day on his thesis.

It was a first major study on the changing profile of Parliament, he claimed.

Contrary to the perception that politicians lack interest in studies, Mr. Shankar, a law graduate, did his M.A. after becoming the Chairman of the Legislative Council.

Ms. Jayamala said that she had to stay away from cinema for some time to complete her thesis.

Mr. Shankar and Ms. Jayamala received the degrees from the former President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
