NIMS rapped for surgery delay
Special Correspondent
Patient should be treated free of cost, provided with proper nutrition and medicine: SHRC
HYDERABAD: The AP State Human Rights Commission on Friday came down heavily on the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) for delaying surgery on a seven-year-old poor girl, who has two holes in her heart. The commission warned that it would not hesitate to take action against the concerned if the operation was not performed within a week. Referring to a “startling news report” published in a Telugu daily, B. Subhashan Reddy, chairperson, in an order said holes in the heart of Anusha, daughter of a jogini, were detected in 2006. On June 28 her name was registered for a heart operation. Since then her hapless mother, Narsamma, was hoping anxiously for the surgery.
The commission directed that the patient be treated free of cost and provided with proper nutrition and medicine. It asked Medak Collector to ensure that Anusha and her mother, residents of Salojipalli in Medak district, were escorted to NIMS at government’s cost. It asked NIMS director and Medak Collector to file their compliance reports by January 25.
