PMK wants cement bags ceiling raised to 400

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State Government should explain the basis on which it has fixed 100 bags as the maximum quantity to be made available for purchase, Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss said on Saturday.

Describing the move as shocking, he wondered whether it would not affect the implementation of the proposal mooted by private manufacturers to supply 20 lakh bags a month, taking into account the maximum need of 400 bags for every low-income group consumer.

Dr. Ramadoss said the ceiling should be raised to 400 bags as suggested by the manufacturers, as the limit of 100 bags would not help the weaker sections.

He said it was not his intention to blindly criticise all the moves of the Government or threaten it every day. His party had been organising agitations to demand steps for containing the cement price only to safeguard the interests of the people.
